Sony Vegas Workshop Introduction
The purpose of the CTV Digital Editing Workshop is to teach you how to use Sony Vegas to create a show to air on our station. In order for us to do this succesfully, let us answer a few basic questions about the class:
- Do I need to know how to use a computer to take this class? Yes. You must have basic computer skills in order to learn digital editing. This workshop is based on PC software and hardware, so a basic understanding of how a computer works is essential to this class. If you have never used a computer before, you will need to take some basic computer classes in order to familiarize yourself with the parts and functions of a PC. CTV does not teach basic computer skills, but there are many places locally that offer free classes for adults to learn basic computing.
- Do I own the copyright on the show I produce when I use CTV equipment? No. CTV owns the copyright on anything produced with CTV equipment. Basically, this means that the program you edit can only be aired on our station; it cannot be broadcast anywhere else, nor can it be reproduced without our permission.
- What if I "just want to learn editing?" This is a workshop designed to get your show on the air, and the workshop will teach you the basic skills you need in order to do exactly that. This workshop is not intended for people who are looking for potential job training, nor is it intended for those who are looking for a hobby. Because our station depends on original programming to stay on the air, we only teach the editing workshop to people who actually plan to produce a television program for our channel.
- What if I don't know what kind of show I want to do? It is important to have at least an idea of what kind of show you would like to produce. We highly recommend that you bring video footage that you have shot previously to the workshop so that we may get started right away on producing your show. CTV provides generic stock footage for training purposes, but using your existing footage will make the editing process much smoother and will allow you to complete the workshop much faster. If you haven't shot anything previously, you should take the portable camera workshop to get started on your show. If you have no idea what kind of show you want to do, and do not have any existing footage to edit with, then this workshop is probably not for you.
- Which version of Sony Vegas does CTV use? CTV's training and production is based on Sony Vegas version 6.0d. A link to a trial download of the software is provided on the next page.
- What if I already know how to use Vegas, or I am familiar with other NLE software? If you are experienced in digital editing, then you will most likely be able to be certified in one session, provided you can demonstrate your knowledge of editing to the CTV instructor. Keep in mind that CTV retains the copyright on anything produced with CTV equipment.
Now that you know exactly what the purpose of the workshop is, it's time to get started!
