AUDIO SETTINGS can be adjusted at the rear of the camera on the left side. To make these adjustments, the white door must be flipped open. In many situations the onboard STEREO MICROPHONE in the AUTOMATIC mode is just fine for recording. If, however, you need to adjust the levels on the onboard microphone, simply switch the AUDIO 1/MIC REC LEVEL setting from AUTOMATIC [A] to MANUAL [M]. Then, adjust the corresponding LEVEL and BALANCE knobs to the desired levels.

You can view the audio levels for both channels in the meter under the handle. A NORMAL AUDIO LEVEL is achieved when the meters peak at the level of the “12” on the meter. If you are getting no sound out of the microphone, make sure the INPUT SELECT switch is set “MIC”, not to “AUDIO 1”. The MIC setting on this switch is for the on board microphone. The “ATT” setting also uses the onboard microphone, but it cuts out lower level noises, which comes in handy when you are taping in an area with a lot of background noise. The “AUDIO-1” setting is for use with external microphones. We will discuss this more when we talk about the external microphones.

If you want to LISTEN to the sound being recorded, you can plug a set of HEADPHONES into the green HEADPHONE JACK located just below the PHONES LEVEL control located on the back of the handle.

Just peel back the headphone jack cover, and plug them into the jack. You can adjust the volume to a comfortable level in the HEADPHONES by turning the PHONES LEVEL knob.

Now let's set up the camera to use external microphones for even better audio...
