External Microphones

Plug the MICROPHONE into the other end of the XLR cable. Switch the AUDIO 1/MIC switch to “AUDIO-1”. This will override the onboard microphone and receive sound from the EXTERNAL MICROPHONES.

Check your AUDIO LEVELS in the meter. The left microphone will be the LEFT CHANNEL. The right microphone will be the RIGHT CHANNEL. If one level is significantly LOUDER than the other, change the REC LEVEL switch from “A” to “M”. Then, use the BALANCE control to equalize them in the meter. If the OVERALL LEVEL of the external microphones is too low, change the REC LEVEL switch from “A” to “M” and adjust the LEVEL control. Handheld microphones are most useful when you want to talk with a number of people or want to get sound from a larger area.

LAVALIER MICROPHONES are useful when you want to record people who are talking in a noisier area, or when you want the microphones to be less evident. To clip on the Lavalier Microphone, hold the CLIP for the microphone and pinch the ends of the ring together. Slip the microphone into the ring and release the ring ends. Clip the microphone on the person’s clothing up near the face, either in the center, such as on a shirt placket, or on the collar to the side that the person will be talking. In dual interview situations, be aware of the direction faces will be turned when subjects are speaking to determine the final orientation of the microphone. If the person has a beard, place it just low enough that the beard will not scratch along the top of the microphone, as that will cause noise. DO NOT tap on the top of the microphone or blow into it to perform a SOUND TEST. Simply, speak into it and watch the audio meter.

NOTE: As a safety precaution, we recommend duct-taping the microphone wires to the ground to prevent anyone from potentially tripping over them during the course of your shoot.
