Basic Lighting

Place one light on each side of the camera about 6 feet away, aimed at the subject. Make sure the lights are set higher than your subject, about an equal distance away from the subject. Now turn the light “on”. If one light is turned off, you will see very stark shadows from the subjects on the opposite side from the remaining light. When the second light is turned back “on”, the light from the other side will overpower the shadows caused by first light.

If the lights are too bright, turn them off, allow them to cool, and place a LIGHT SCREEN on each. This will bring the light level down. If you do not have room to use two lights in this arrangement, you can use just one light. Place it high behind the camera aimed at the subject. It will give you a reasonably flat light and the major shadows will be hidden below, in back of the subject.

If you want to minimize the shadows even more with the one light, you can turn the light around, insert the open UMBRELLA into the hole, and tighten the screw. The result will be a softer light, with less distinct shadows. If you want a look that is less flat with two lights, place a LIGHT SCREEN on just one light. You will have some shadows on one side of the face, giving more of a 3 dimensional, natural look. Using lights this way, you have a KEY LIGHT (the one without the screen), and a FILL LIGHT (the one with the screen).
