Manual Functions Overview

The XL-1 has a variety of manual settings that will allow the user to optimize the camera depending on the shooting environment. CTV does not recommend that producers use these manual functions, as in most situations, the “EZ CAM” mode (previously discussed) or “AUTOMATIC” mode (see below) will provide optimum results.

However, we will briefly discuss some manual settings on the website. When you take the actual portable camera class, you'll get to learn about all of the camera's manual features.

We will start with the main POWER WHEEL of the camera. This wheel has several different settings: VCR, EZ-Cam, Automatic, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, Manual, and Spotlight.

The VCR [VCR] mode is for PLAYBACK. When this mode is selected, you can use the VCR controls located under the cover on the handle. In order, they include: “PAUSE”, “STOP”, “REWIND”, “PLAY”, “FAST FORWARD”, and “RECORD”. While operating these controls, recorded footage can be viewed through the EYEPIECE. The EZ-CAM [Green Square] mode, (previously discussed), is the FULLY AUTOMATIC mode. When the EZ-CAM mode is used, none of the individual features can be MANUALLY adjusted. When the AUTOMATIC [A] mode is selected, all of the features are controlled automatically, unless you deliberately switch some of them to MANUAL mode.

The SHUTTER PRIORITY [Tv] mode will automatically shift the APERTURE of the lens when you change the SHUTTER SPEED to maintain proper EXPOSURE. The shutter speeds range from 1/60 second to 1/15000 second. They are displayed in the upper left corner of the screen. This mode would be used, for example, if you were shooting racecars or speedboats and wanted them to be very sharp and clear. You would use a normal shutter speed in the pits and for the crowd shots, then change to a higher shutter speed for the race itself.

The “APERTURE PRIORITY” [Av] mode is used to change the DEPTH OF FIELD by changing the APERTURE. The higher the F-STOP NUMBER - the smaller the aperture, and the greater the depth of field. The f-stop can range from F-1.8 to F-16 and is also displayed in the upper right corner of the screen. This is useful, for example, when you want the speaker to be in focus while allowing the background to be out of focus. This is often done to emphasize what the speaker is saying. If the aperture is set too small for the available light, the f-stop indicator will blink, alerting you that your video will appear darker than normal.

The MANUAL MODE [M], is used only when you wish to set the majority of the features yourself. This mode is NOT RECOMMENDED unless you have a great deal of experience in videography.

The last setting on the wheel is the SPOTLIGHT [triangle] MODE. This mode works well with stage lighting and other situations where there is intense light surrounded by shadow.

Now let's take a quick look at manual focus and white balance...
