Framing & Shooting

Whenever you are shooting, especially when the camera is hand-held, it is usually desirable to find something in the shot that is either VERTICAL or HORIZONTAL to look at so that you can keep the shot from angling over. When shooting in a hand-held situation, you should also try to keep the camera lens in the WIDE ANGLE position and you should MOVE CLOSER to the subject to get a CLOSE-UP shot. The reason for this is that any movement of the camera is magnified if the lens has been zoomed in. Even movement that are very small, such as slight up/down movements from breathing, become much more noticeable as a bobbing motion during close-up shots. If you need to use the ZOOM feature, it is best to use a tripod, when possible.

Whenever you FRAME UP your subject, try to think of a TIC-TAC-TOE BOARD over the screen. You want your subject to occupy the upper center, center, lower center, right center and left center squares. Things in the CORNER SQUARES tend to get lost. Also, you want the subject squares to be filled in ways to balance the screen. For example, in a CLOSE-UP of a persons face, the person’s head should fill the area at the top center and the center of the screen. Their shoulders should fill the side center and the lower center areas. In a WIDE SHOT, two people talking should have their upper bodies and heads in the right and left center areas.

Whenever you want to perform a PAN, TILT or ZOOM, slower is usually better. QUICK MOVEMENTS of any kind tend to unsettle the audience, and too much of it can actually make them nauseous. Practice these movements so that you can perform them smoothly, both from the tripod and hand-held. HINT: In a hand-held situation, if you PLANT YOUR FEET so that you are facing the end of the pan, then turn your body to start the pan, you will be more comfortable shooting the rest of the shot.

Now let's look at shooting with a tripod...
