Camera Basics
Take a look at the diagram of the XL1 below to familiarize yourself with the locations of the camera's parts...

We will go over each of the camera's features over the next couple of pages, but right now, we are going to prepare you to start shooting in "EZ-Cam Mode." There are just a few things you need to know to get started...
Remove the Lens Cap - Remove the LENS CAP by pinching the 2 tabs on the side of the lens cap grip and gently pulling the lens cap straight out. To replace the lens cap, pinch the 2 tabs, place the lens cap on the front of the lens, and let go of the tabs.
Grip The Camera Properly - To grip the camera, slide your right hand into the HANDIGRIP STRAP on the right side of the camera, and grip the handle. Your left hand "cradles" the lens casing (palm up) for comfortable support and easy access to focus ring, zoom ring, and image controls on camera's left side. Alternatively, you can grip the camera by the HANDLE on top of the camera. You'll use this method for special shooting circumstances, or when you're trying to achieve a specific shot, such as a low angle. An AUXILLARY set of ZOOM and RECORD controls is on top of the camera to accomodate this shooting method.
Use the Shoulder Mount - A SHOULDER MOUNT can be attached to the back of the camera for added stability and to relieve the weight of the camera for the user. To use the mount, simply pull it down and around under the camera. This will allow you to comfortably hold the camera and look through the EYEPIECE located on the top (left side) of the camera. When you want to use the camera from your SHOULDER, slide your right hand into the HANDIGRIP STRAP on the right side of the camera. Allow the SHOULDER MOUNT to rest on the top front of your shoulder. Adjust the horizontal position of the EYEPIECE by loosening the adjustment and sliding it to the most comfortable position before it is retightened.
Zoom Control - Use the first two fingers of your hand to control the camera’s ZOOM CONTROL located on the top of the handgrip. When you press the front of the zoom control (T), the lens will rotate to the TELEPHOTO MODE, and make things appear closer. When you press the back part of the control (W), it will cause the lens to rotate to the WIDE ANGLE mode and make things appear farther away. If you press the control gently, the zoom will be slower, and if you press it completely, the zoom will be faster.
Now let's start shooting!
